Patch types

Six kinds of patch. Here is how to choose.

The right patch depends on what it goes on and how much detail is in your logo. If you are stuck between two, send us the logo and we will tell you.
Embroidered patch

Embroidered

Raised thread stitched onto twill.

The classic patch. Thread gives it texture you can feel, and it holds up to washing. Best when the design has clear shapes and text above about 1/4 inch tall.

Good for: Logos, uniforms, jackets, hats, club and brand patches.

PVC patch

PVC

Soft molded rubber, waterproof.

Made in a mold, so edges and raised layers stay sharp. Water, sun and dirt don't hurt it. Usually paired with a hook and loop backing.

Good for: Bags, tactical gear, outdoor and work wear.

Printed patch

Printed

Full-color print on fabric.

When the design has shading or fine color detail that thread can't follow, we print it, then finish the edge with a merrow or hot-cut border.

Good for: Photos, gradients and artwork with lots of colors.

Woven

Flat, fine thread.

Thinner thread than embroidery, so small lettering stays readable. Flat finish, lighter weight.

Good for: Small text and detailed logos.

Chenille

Fuzzy looped yarn.

The varsity look. Soft raised yarn, usually on felt, often with an embroidered outline.

Good for: Letterman and team jackets.

Leather

Debossed or printed leather.

Real or faux leather with your logo pressed or printed in. Sewn on for the strongest hold.

Good for: Hats, denim, bags.

Backings

Iron-on

Heat-pressed onto cotton or poly blends. Good for hats, shirts and bags.

Hook and loop (Velcro)

The patch comes off and goes back on. Common on tactical gear and uniforms.

Sew-on

Stitched on. The strongest hold, and the right choice for leather and heavy jackets.

Adhesive

Peel and stick for short-term use, like events and giveaways.

Borders

Merrow

A thick wrapped edge. Classic look, works on circles, ovals, squares and shields.

Hot-cut

Cut with heat right at the design edge. Use it for custom shapes a merrow border can't follow.

No border

For PVC and leather, where the edge is part of the mold or cut.
